Why is my hair green? The swimming pool contractors from Swimright Pool Service and Repair hear this from their customers — especially if they are new to pool ownership and are taking care of the pool water maintenance on their own. It is typically blonde hair that turns green from water chemistry that is out of line, and there are fixes that can be made to address the green hair issue.
Why is my hair green?
Did you know that it’s copper in the water that causes hair to turn green? Copper is found in pools, mainly those that fill the pool with well water. Copper can also get into the pool water from certain algaecides that are copper-based. When the copper in the water is oxidized by the chlorine in the water it will bind to the protein in your hair and your hair will take on a green tint.
To prevent your blonde hair from turning green you:
- Can stop using copper-based algaecides. Read the ingredients before you purchase them or ask us whether the cleaning agents we use have copper in them.
- Get the metal out of your pool water. This can be accomplished by your pool service contractor using a chemical to remove metal from the water. If you’re filling yoru pool from a garden hose there are also pre-filters that can be added to remove copper from the water before it gets into your pool.
- Protect your hair by using a leave-in conditioner before you swim. Wear a bathing cap. Wash and rinse your hair after you’ve gotten out of the swimming pool to remove chemicals from your hair.
If, no matter what you try to get the green out of your hair, ask your beautician for professional shampoos or other hair treatments you can try to protect your hair and keep it from turning green.
