Here are some ways to prevent foaming hot tub water and some of the reasons it could happen. 
- Ask guests to shower before using the hot tub. Shower off hair spray, body oil, deodorant, hair gel and dead skin could eliminate a foaming hot tub.
- Be careful what you’re washing your bathing suits with. You want to occasionally use laundry soap, but other times wash without soap. Using soap for sensitive skin — those without harsh chemicals are best.
- Keep food and drinks from being spilled into the hot tub water. Sure a glass of wine may be something you enjoy in the hot tub, but if it spills, it can lead to the chemicals getting out of balance. Also, alcohol and hot water don’t mix and never use the hot tub alone — regarldess of whether you’re drinking alcohol.
- Using inexpensive chemicals and cleaning agents or even too many chemicals in your water can lead to foaming water.
- Undissolved solids could be the culprit. Chemicals are added to the water to keep it bacteria-free, it can’t address the total dissolved solids – these are items such as dead skin, hair, body lotion, and more. If these solids rise to the surface of the water and get churned around in the air jet bubbles they will cause foaming. If the water gets saturated with the total dissolved solids – a simple water testing can help you determine what the ratio of total dissolved solids are.
If your hot tub is foaming your pool contractor will recommend draining it and thoroughly cleaning it to assure you won’t have the issue again. A chemical balancing and addition just might not address this situation. As with a swimming pool, it is crucial to keep up with hot tub maintenance to hopefully prevent this from happening.
