How deep should your pool be?

Visit the pools of friends. Make sure you know what you may want to do in your pool Swim laps? Play games? A combination? Do you have young children? Will you have an empty nest? There are a lot of considerations including:

  • What will it be used for and who will be using it?
  • Do you have your heart set on a diving board or slide? If so, there are building requirements that need to be met in order to be able to have one of these accessories.
  • A beach entry pool is ideal for someone with mobility issues or for young children.
  • Many people find that a pool that is three and a half to four and a half feet deep from end to end is the usual depth if you aren’t getting a deep end.
  • Building material could play a role in the depth of the pool.
  • The soil in your yard may help make your choice for you — if it is too rocky to dig deep, a pool of one depth may be your option.

It will cost more to clean and maintain a swimming pool with a deep end. It will take more money to heat and cool it.
