  1. A leaking swimming pool will lead to water loss and the cost to refill it. If you think the pool is leaking, perform the “bucket test.” Fill a bucket with water, mark the water level in the bucket, place it next to your pool and measure whether the water in the bucket evaporates at the same rate as the pool water. Check for damp spots around the pool.
  2. A pool cover is your pool’s best friend. If you don’t use a cover, you can lose up to an inch of water a week; that’s close to 7,000 gallons a year!
  3. Ask your pool contractor whether the pool really needs to be back washed. Why? When it’s back washed, it uses extra water. Keep the pool and filters clean eliminates the need for frequent backwashing.
  4. Keep the water about an inch above the bottom pool tile. This will keep water in when swimmers are splashing.
  5. Lower the temperature in the pool water a degree or two to conserve money and slow down the rate of evaporation.
  6. If you add chlorine in the daytime, the sun dissipates the chlorine. Add chlorine at night.
  7. Your landscape design will help conserve water. Strategic planting of trees, shrubbery and fencing or privacy barriers can cut down on evaporation caused by the wind.

Owning a swimming pool is an investment and will bring with it ongoing costs, finding ways to conserve water will save money without dampening any of the fun you and your family share in the pool!
