SwimRight Pool service contractors serving Scottsdale, Arizona discuss pool depths
What is the “perfect” depth for my swimming pool water? Even though we are swimming pool service contractors we do hear this question, especially from customers who are looking at a swimming pool remodel. Yes, you can add or subtract pool water depth as part of a swimming pool remodel project; it’s a big undertaking, but it can be done. If you’re still in the research phase for a swimming pool project though you will need to decide how deep you want your swimming pool water and there are many things to take into consideration.
The swimming pool service contractors from SwimRight Pools in Scottsdale, Arizona offer this list of questions to ponder when you’re deciding on the depth of your pool water:
- What will the swimming pool be used for and by whom? Will you be swimming laps? Playing in pool games such as volleyball? What are the ages and swim levels of your children? Answer these questions and you will be on your way to narrowing down your choices in pool water depth.
- The depth of your pool water could depend on the ages of your children as they may not be comfortable — and you may not allow them — to swim in a deep end. A beach entry or a pool depth of three feet or less might be ideal for the youngsters in your family. Keep in mind though, that they will grow up quickly and if you have a shallow end, it may be obsolete and you may have an are of your pool that is underutilized. For adults, three and a half feet or deeper is ideal for swimming so they don’t hit their feet or hands on the bottom; this is also the ideal depth for in-pool games. Feet first jumping requires a depth of at least four feet. Diving in headfirst requires a pool depth of at least nine feet; there are other regulations associated with having a diving board in your swimming pool, talk with us to find those specific regulations in Scottsdale.
- Having a beach entry into the pool — one that starts out shallow and gradually slopes to a deep end — is great for children and for those with limited mobility for whom using stairs might be problematic.
The type of pool building material may be one of the deciding factors on determining the perfect pool depth. A gunite swimming pool provides virtually any depth. A fiberglass or vinyl liner swimming pool may have more limitations on the depths available and the amount of slope you choose for the pool depth.
As pool service contractors we know it takes more money to clean and maintain a swimming pool with a deep end. It could take more money to heat it and more chemicals to keep it clean and more money to fill and refill it. Having a deep in the pool means you will want to, for safety sake, have in floor and in wall pool underwater pool lighting.
The depth of your swimming pool water is a subjective decision as are many that you will make in the course of pool ownership.
