As a bit of background, there are three types of building materials from which a pool can be constructed. They include:
- Concrete
- Fiberglass
- Vinyl liner
Is it time to replace the pool liner?
Each type of construction material has its unique pros, cons and price points. In this piece, though we want to focus on a vinyl liner swiming pool. A vinyl liner pool is the least expensive and is an ideal choice for many pool owners — but you must understand that at some point, the liner will need to be replaced.
During our service visits for homeowners with vinyl liner swimming pools, we check the liner for any problem areas and point out where there are areas of wear or concern. What leads to a vinyl liner pool needing to be replaced?
- Pool chemicals
- Regular use
- Age
- The environment in which the pool resides — fluctuating temperatures, earthquakes, etc. play a role in the life space of a liner.
A swimming pool that is well-cared for will last a long time — regardless of the type of liner or construction material. Be advised though that a vinyl liner pool is obviously more prone to rips and tears. We have found that some vinyl liner pools have lasted more than a decade, while others have had to be replaced around year six — it depends on how you care for it and how careful you are with potentially sharp objects getting into the water.
If you’re new to pool ownership, understand the ins and outs, advantages and disadvantages as well as the price points of all construction material options available.
