Whether you close your pool for the season or if you live in Scottsdale, Arizona where it’s possible to enjoy your swimming pool year round, there are times when you need to take the time to clean your pool deck. Here are our best steps on how to clean your pool deck, and reasons why you should.
When is the last time you thoroughly cleaned your deck? Do you need your pool contractor from SwimRight Pool Service and Repair to clean it for you when we pay our next service visit? If so, let us know and we will schedule it in.
How to clean your pool deck
- Remove any furniture and other moveable items from the deck. You will also want to take time to clean the pool furniture, but that is information for a future article. You will definitely want to take time to hose down, wash and thoroughly clean the furniture at least once a season.
- If the deck is concrete you will want to wash it and you can use a pressure washer, if you understand how to use one without damaging the concrete surface — pressure washers are so powerful they can easily peel up the concrete if you’re not careful. Grab a scrub brush and pool-water safe/friendy cleaning supplies and brush down the concrete deck once you’ve washed or swept away dirt and debris. After you’ve scrubbed it, thoroughly rinse the cleaning solution off — rinse away from the pool so you don’t contaminate the water.
- If you have a wooden deck, you will want to set aside time to not only clean it, but to restain it or repaint it. Clean way all dirt and grime, sand it if necessary and then apply the stain or paint of your choice.
- Cleaning the deck frequently, especially if you live in an area of the country in which leaves fall from the trees will keep the deck free of staining from the fallen leaves and other debris such as bird droppings.
- Snow removal should be performed on decks — especially above ground pool decks. When you’re shoveling the driveway and sidewalks that should be your sign to shovel off the deck. The weight of the snow can damage the pool and the deck.
- It may not always be a practical solution, but if you want to, you can check into getting a deck cover. The ability to use one of these will depend on the style of your deck and the money you want to spend on it. A deck cover will protect it from the elements, but again, they may be costly and don’t always fit all deck styles.
Plan to spend time giving your deck at least a quick cleaning and once over weekly during the summer swim season.
