There are two basic types of water bugs you will find in your pool:

  1. Boatmen – they’re oval, they eat algae and mosquito larvae. They don’t bite. They lay eggs in any pool water algae they can find.
  2. Backswimmers – are thin and they skim across the surface of the water. They will eat other bugs, including boatmen, and water beetles.

How to get bugs out of your pool

  1. To kill them you need to take away their in-pool fod source. If they’re eating algae, you need to make certain there is no algae in our pool water. This may require your pool contractor to shock the water to kill off any algae.
  2. Scrub the walls and floors of the pool.
  3. Vacuum away any algae. You don’t have to be able to see algage growth for it to be there and to feed the water bugs.

If the bugs remain steadfast in the face of your pool cleaning efforts, you may need to resort to skimming them out of the water and putting them in a bucket of oil — since they breathe air and can’t swim in oil, they will drown. It may sound cruel, but you don’t want to keep swimming with bugs, do you? Using a swimming pool cover whenever you’re not in the pool will be one of the best and biggest steps you can take to keep bugs out of the pool water.
