Cleaning and maintaining the swimming pool is a given for every swimming pool owner, but how often do you clean your pool deck? Do you even know how to clean your pool deck? The swimming pool contractors from SwimRight Pool Service and Repair can take on that task on your behalf or they can offer tips on how you can clean the pool deck yourself; it is a do-it-yourself project.

How to clean your pool deck

The swimming pool deck should be cleaned and disinfected regularly. Doing this will prevent the growth of algae or the spread of any disease. A thorough cleaning will also clear away any bacteria that can cause slipperiness on the deck.

The material that the deck is made of will determine what kind of cleaning materials you will use on it. The surface material for a deck can range from wooden to fiberglass to paver stones to concrete and anything in between. The first thing you need to do to clean the deck is to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for how to clean it; if you have purchased a home with a pool and don’t have access to the manufacturer’s information, just ask us we can offer advice on how to clean the deck.

Depending on the size of the pool deck you may want to invest in a pressure washer. Be aware though — they are powerful and if not used correctly can peel the paint right off the deck. A pressure washer will make cleaning and disinfecting of a large deck quicker and easier than if you’re out there with a hand held scrub brush.

For smaller decks, you will want to grab a bucket of pool-friendly non-abrasive cleaning solution and water and a brush and begin cleaning. Check with us to make certain you’re using a cleaning solution that won’t upset the balance of your pool water. A detergent mix of TSP (tri sodium phosphate) available at hardware stores, mixed with water can be used to clean the deck whether you’re using a brush or a pressuer washer.

In addition to simply washing the pool deck, you need to take the second step and disinfect it. Washing will remove some bacteria, but not all. Look for a commercial disinfectant made specifically for cleaning swimming pool decks.

If you simply don’t want to take on the task of washing and disinfecting the pool deck, ask us for a quote to do that during our next service visit.
