If you know monsoon is on its way it is easy to protect the pool and minimize the negative impacts on the pool water chemistry and equipment. Sometimes though that isn’t possible. You’re not home or the storm blows through so quickly you had no time to prepare for the dirt, dust rain and debris the storm brings with it.
Do monsoons impact Arizona swimming pools?

- Make sure there are no branches or palm fronds over the pool that can get blown in and impact the pool. Trim back branches. If they are heavy with leaves or are dead or dying they could break off in the monsoon winds and rain and damage the pool.
- If you have new trees, stake them to protect them from snapping off. Make certain the stakes are in the ground at least two feet deep.
- In Arizona, there are more lightning strikes than any other state – except Florida. It’s important to have lightning rods because most strikes happen during monsoon season. There are whole-house lighting rods that incorporate adding half a dozen rods to your roof. Talk to a certified lighting rod installation professional for proper placement and the number that you need.
- Divert water away from the pool deck and make sure it flows away from the pool — this will be achieved through proper grading when the pool is installed.
- Patio pavers, designed with holes, allow the water to drain through rather than sit on top like it would with concrete walkways.
- Keep the pool cover on during the storm.
- Turn off the electricity to the pool to protect it.
- Remove or tie-down furniture so they don’t become projectiles or fall into the pool and damage it.
