Poolside fire pits are beautiful, but must be used safety, SwimRight Pool contractors explain

As part of a swimming pool renovation you may talk with the swimming pool service contractors from SwimRight Pools, about adding a poolside fire pit as part of the project. Fire pits are beautiful and functional, even in Arizona for those cold desert nights when summer has waned. With a fire pit you and your family can enjoy longer nights around the pool being warmed by the heat of the fire from the poolside fire pits. A poolside fire pit also provides light without having to flip a switch.

Safety tips for poolside fire pits

If, after you’ve talked with your pool contractor you decide that a fire pit is a feature you want to add to your pool as part of a new construction or a renovation or remodeling project, here are some safety tips to keep front of mind.

  • Choose the fuel you will burn in your fire pit. You can use wood, propane, gel or natural gas. Choose the one that makes sense for your family both from a usability and a price standpoint.
  • Plan for the slab upon which it will be built. The firepit needs to be constructed on a stable, fireproof surface. It cannot be built — safely — in the corner of your grassy yard or under a tree.
  • The firepit shouldn’t be by your home or other structures which could potentially be flammable or combustible. Use a mesh cover on the firepit to prevent embers from leaving the structure.
  • Which way does the wind typically blow through your yard? You don’t want to have it blowing directly into the firepit and sending smoke everywhere, nor do you want to have the smoke blowing into your neighbor’s yard.
  • Fully extinguish the fire when you’re done. It should never be left unattended or allowed to “burn itself out.” Stray embers can lead to uncontrollable fires.
  • Never leave children unattended around a firepit. Don’t allow them to run next to it or to poke around in the firepit or to cook anything unattended.

Work with your swimming pool contractor to find a place that is both safe and poolside adjacent if you want your pool to be illuminated by the light of the fire.
