SwimRight Pool Service and Repair contractors explain how to clean your swimming pool deck, as it’s a task that should be undertaken regularly by the pool owner, but may not be thought of or done as often as it should be. When you clean your swimming pool deck you need to assure you’re not using any chemicals that could harm or upset the balances of the pool water.
The reason for cleaning the pool deck regularly is to disinfect it, prevent the growth of bacteria because that could make the pool deck slippery and to remove any mold spores.
How to clean your swimming pool deck
The type of pool deck surface material you have will be an indicator of the type of cleaning it need. The cleaning process for a wooden deck will vary from the cleaning process for a cement deck or a tiled deck. It’s important that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean the deck; if you don’t have access to that information, ask us how to clean the deck so you can assure it’s thoroughly clean without damaging the surface.
You may want to brush the area, but the type brush you use will be determined by, again, the building material of the deck. Some individuals find that using a pressure washer is the ideal way for them to clean the deck. Caution needs to be used when using a pressure washer because if you have the pressure too high, use it too closely to the surface it could potentially damage the surface and cause more harm than good. A pressure washer, in the hands of a professional, is great for cleaning and disinfecting the deck and frankly, if you had to do it inch by inch by hand, it would be such a time consuming task that no one would clean their deck.
If there are particular areas of staining or concern, it may be quicker and easier to simply use a scrub brush and a cleaning solvent that your pool contractor recommends. One cleaning product that can be used for your pool deck work is tri sodium phosphate (TSP); you can purchase this at any pool supply store.
After the deck has been cleaned, don’t forget to disinfect it to kill off any bacteria. Again, ask your pool service contractor for advice on a pool disinfectant product to use.
