How pool owners can save water and money

  •  Use a swimming pool cover. Did you know that when you don’t use a pool cover you can lost up to half of the water in your pool in one year to evaporation? When you are diligent in the use of a swimming pool cover you can prevent evaporation by as much as 90%. Using a pool cover will also make pool cleaning and maintenance easier.
  • Check for leaks. Look for areas outside the pool that are saturated. If you use a cover, don’t splash out copious amounts of water and are still continually filling the pool you may have a leak. Ask us to check during our next service visit.
  • If the pool water level is too high it will get splashed out more than it would if the levels were lower. Keep the water level one inch above the bottom pool tile for optimal swimming and minimal splash out.
  • Lower the pool water temperature — by even one or two degrees — and you will notice a change in the amount of water lost to evaporation and those who use the pool may not even notice the difference.
  • Don’t backwash the pool more than necessary. Conserve the water used during the backwashing process to water lawns and shrubs (only if the water isn’t chlorinated or salt treated)
  • Add chlorine after the sun has gone down. When you add it at night it won’t evaporate during the heat of the sun.
  • Landscape for water conservation.  Trees, privacy fences and shrubs can help reduce water loss from evaporation if your’e preventing wind from continually blowing aross the top of the pool.
  • When you’re not in the pool, turn off the water that runs in the fountains, waterfalls and slide.
  • Run the pool pump when needed. Automation will help with this task as you can program it to turn on and turn off at predetermined times.
